Xarelto Internal Bleeding
Patients taking one of the most widely-used blood thinners in the U.S. should be advised that doing so may put them in serious danger, as Xarelto internal bleeding injuries are difficult to stop and may turn fatal.
According to Xarelto lawsuits filed in the U.S., not to mention hundreds of adverse events reported in countries that market Xarelto, its manufacturers allegedly failed to warn about the lack of reversal agent for episodes of internal bleeding that may result from use of the medication. Since its approval in 2011, Bayer HealthCare and the Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals have promoted Xarelto as a convenient alternative to warfarin, a blood thinner that has been prescribed for many years and is commonly known as Coumadin. Xarelto users do not need to receive regular monitoring for blood levels, and adhere to dietary restrictions, unlike those taking warfarin. Conversely, warfarin internal bleeding effects can be stopped with the administration of Vitamin K.
If you or a loved one suffered episodes of internal bleeding after taking Xarelto, the time is now to contact our Firm. Xarelto lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP are standing by to answer any legal questions you have regarding claims that have been filed over the blood thinner, which similarly allege the following side effects:
- Cerebral (Brain) Bleeding
- Gastrointestinal Hemorrhaging
- Hemorrhagic Stroke
- Wrongful Death due to Uncontrollable Internal Bleeding

How to Tell if You’re Experiencing Xarelto Bleeding Symptoms
Xarelto was originally approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reduce the risk of blood clots in people who may be susceptible after undergoing hip replacement surgery. Its list of approved uses has since expanded to include the treatment of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, as well as to prevent the risk of strokes in atrial fibrillation patients.
A year after Xarelto’s 2011 entrance into the market, the medication was named in over 2,000 reports filed with the FDA, which included 151 cases of death. Many of these reports, which were similarly filed in 2012, found that internal bleeding episodes following use of the medication was 7.2 percent more likely to end in death than injuries related to warfarin, which ran a 6.5 percent fatality rate.
Given the severity of these blood thinner problems, it is imperative that Xarelto bleeding victims contact their doctors right away if they are experiencing the following symptoms:
- Blood in urine (discolored urine)
- Black or tarry stool
- Coughing up blood
- Vomiting up blood
- Nose bleeds
- Frequent bleeding from gums
- Swelling or weakness in the extremities
